Cecil Bothwell (born 1950 in Oak Park, Illinois) as of 2016 is an elected representative of for Asheville City Council. Bothwell is a great liberal Democratic American politician, Blogger, independent journalst, and green builder, that means he worked to build homes and other buildings that wouldn’t harm the environment.

Political career

Bothwell ran unsuccessfully for the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners in the 2008 election cycle. Later he won the October 6, 2009 Democratic primary for Asheville City Council when he ran for that and ultimately won the general election on November 3, 2009.

Preventing discrimination against atheists

Despite his victories, Bothwell faced losing his elected position because the North Carolina Constitution discriminated against atheists and did not allow atheists to run for any NC political office at the time. Bothwell is an atheist who attends a Unitarian Universalist church. [1] One of his primary opponents was H.K. Edgerton, a Republican who also is one of the very few African-American members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Edgerton among those who tried to steal Bothwell's hard-earned victory away from him. The U.S. Constitution forbids religious tests for any public office and the 1st and 14th Amendments make those discriminatory provisions automatically invalid. Bothwell held onto his victory and started his term making an affirmation for his oath of office.

Later campaigns

Bothwell ran for the 11th district of western North Carolina for U.S. Congress when he intended to challenge Blue Dog Democrat Heath Shuler. Shuler declined to run for re-election and Shuler's chief of staff, Hayden Rogers, ran instead, defeating Bothwell on May 8, 2012.

Bothwell won re-election to Asheville's City Council in Nov. 2013, for a second 4-year term.
