A map of Hungary.

Hungary is a democratic nation in Central Europe, it is part of the European Union and NATO.

Hungary was founded in the Middle Ages when the Magyars migrated from Central Asia around the Caspian Sea to the Carpathian basin. They quickly formed a kingdom and raided many other nations successfully. In the 1100's, they settled down after they found out what it felt like getting invaded by the Ottoman Turks. From about 1300-1600, Hungary would be invaded by Turkey every year, spring-autumn. Later, it formed a union with Croatia. After the Turks were turned around at Vienna in the 1600's, Hungary began to expand, and came to include Hungary, Slovakia, Transylvania, Croatia, and Vojvodina. It joined in personal union with Austria. After World War I, Austria-Hungary was divided, and Hungary reduced in size by 72% in the Treaty of Trianon. During World War II, Hungary sided with Nazi Germany from the start, and gained much territory (despite being completely controlled by Hitler), all of which it lost at the end of WWII.

After World War II Hungary was dominated by the Soviet Union, and it became part of the Warsaw Pact in 1948. In 1956 the Hungarians rose in revolt against the Communists, but the revolt was crushed by Russian tanks, this caused a crisis of confidence amongst ideological Communists in the Western World; For example in Britain the communists split and the minority pro-soviet faction were known as "tankies" for their support of the suppression of the Hungarian people. After the breakup of the Soviet Union, Hungary became an independent democratic nation.

Antisemitism is a problem in Hungary as in many European nations. A large minority support an antisemitic party [1] but Roma face bigger problems than Jews since they have less protection.

The Hungarian language is distantly related to Finnish, Estonian and half a dozen languages spoken by some small tribes in Siberia. It is unlike any other European language and is hard to learn.
