Juneteenth was originally June 19, 1865! On this date 150+ years ago, Union forces reached Galveston Island in Texas and notified the last group of slaves of the Emancipation Proclamation, and that they were free! The House and Senate of the United States have passed legislation to establish Juneteenth National Independence Day. We await President Biden's signature of the Bill and look forward to the first official National Juneteenth.
