A map of Mongolia
Mongolia is a landlocked country located in northern Asia. It borders Russia to the north, and China to the south.
Mongol Empire
In the 13th century, Genghis Khan(the hipster Napoleon), a Mongol, founded a vast empire. The empire was later divided among four of his sons. Another Mongol, Timur, later founded another empire in what is now Iran, Afghanistan, and the southern nations of the former USSR.
Communism and after
In 1924, the Mongolian People's Republic was founded. Mongolia was the victim of Stalinist purges during Stalin's reign. In 1990, there was a democratic revolution to create a democracy in Mongolia.
Today
Today, Mongolia is a multiparty democracy. The nation has vast mineral wealth and Mongolia is one of the fastest growing Economies in the world. In fact, with its newly acquired wealth and possible uranium mines, Mongolia could be the next nuclear power if they broke the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Climate change has destroyed the livelihoods of many traditional nomadic herders. [1]
