The President "pro tempore" (Latin term meaning "for the time being") is the legislative deputy of the President of the Senate. He/she basically serves as President of the Senate when the Vice President is absent. The President pro tempore is third in line after the Speaker of the House to succeed to the Presidency of the United States. Chuck Grassley (Republican of Iowa) is the current president "pro tempore."
