Romania is an ancient European state. It was a totalitarian and oppressive regime under dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. The country is now Democratic though there was a long struggle to get to democracy. It was the only country of the revolutions of 1989 where the change of regime turned violent.
With a population of 22 million Romania is rather a significant player in Europe. There is a serious problem with corruption in Romania which delayed Romania’s effort to join the European Union, though Romania is now its member. The Romanian economy went into decline during the 1990s but has now recovered and is developing rapidly.
