The Little Mermaid is a Feminist Disney Film based on a 1837 Hans Christian Andersen story of the same name. The movie promotes women’s rights as the main character Ariel seeks to join the human world to explore it, and be with her crush Prince Eric.

The film was co-produced by Howard Ashman, who also wrote the lyrics for all the songs, and he was a homosexual. Ashman’s personal life can be seen in the song “Part of Your World” making it a pro-gay film.

After the fair critical and box office success of The Great Mouse Detective, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Oliver and Company, The Little Mermaid launched Disney into it’s Renaissance era, where other liberal films were released such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King.

The film received a TV show, a sequel, and a prequel with many of the same themes from the 1989 classic. A live action adaptation is set to be released in 2023.
